A Baking Legacy

The Beckerman family baking legacy* began in 1902 in Zambrow, Poland by Isaac Beckerman. It is there that he established the first family bakery on Ostrowska Street near the town’s central market square. Isaac and his three brothers Joe, Abe and Charlie, who were also bakers, immigrated to Cleveland at the beginning of the 20th century. It was at Ellis Island that they changed the family name from Koziol to Beckerman, which appropriately means “baker” in Yiddish.

The Beckerman Brother’s bakeries became well known for their delicious baked goods throughout Cleveland. They all closed their stores Friday night before sundown. On Sunday morning you were taking your life in your hands to elbow through the crowds to get fresh bagels and kaiser rolls for breakfast. Subsequently, five of Isaac’s sons, one grandson and one-great-grandson became bakers.
